How zines can foster creativity, community, and resistance in the digital age
A zine is a small-circulation, self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually handmade and then reproduced via a copy machine. In this digital era, zines are also digitally created, printed, and distributed via flea markets, social media, and e-distros like Bazinega. Zines are a preferred medium of communication in many sub-cultures, intending to develop identity and voice unique opinions.
Zines: Short(er) stories, quick reads
Zines are especially relevant in these times when people prefer quick, short reads because they offer a refreshing and rewarding alternative to the fast-paced, superficial, and homogeneous digital media landscape. Zines are not meant to be consumed in a hurry, but to be savored, appreciated, and reflected upon. Zines are not meant to be disposable, but to be collected, treasured, and passed on. Zines are not meant to be uniform, but to be diverse, unique, and original.
Zines are also relevant as a source of inspiration, empowerment, and hope in the modern world. Zines can also show us that there is beauty, joy, and wonder in the everyday, that there is more to life than what we see on the screen, and that there is always room for creativity, curiosity, and discovery.
We are happy that a lot of people in Bengaluru, India, got a chance to explore many zines and art collectibles at our pop-up last weekend.
